When the sun sets in the island, a harmony of purples to oranges is an inspiration, is a vision for any artist to portrait in a canvas.

Sunset in Bald Head IslandThrough the years, the island has been a breeding ground for wild hog and fox, a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles, a prime hangout for bootleggers, a Civil War fort. Pirates, lighthouse keepers, Indians, river pilots, soldiers, farmers, and entrepreneurs of all types have come and gone, and yet, the island’s essence is unchanged. This can only be because the island itself is a living thing, with its own integrity, spirit and its wild beauty.

Sunset in Bald Head Island, NC, PaintingInstructions:

  1. Start by drawing, positioning each element in the canvas.
  2. Do your under-paint or imprimatura with gold, using acrylic because they dry faster, also in this painting, gold gives a rich color for a sunset. Draw the tree trunk and grass with black acrylic.
  3. With oils or acrylics, start painting the orange clouds.
  4. Continue by painting the grass and purple sky.
  5. Finish your purple clouds, paint leaves and finish grass with high lights of green and yellow.
  6. Sign your work of art.
